One of the most common questions we hear at Cycle World Witbank is, "How long should my bicycle last?"
Most people expect a simple answer.
Five years?
Ten years?
Twenty years?
After serving the eMalahleni cycling community since 1989, I've learned that the answer has very little to do with age.
I've seen 30-year-old bicycles that ride smoother than bikes less than three years old.
I've also seen R100,000 carbon road bikes destroyed before their second birthday.
If there's one lesson I've learned over the last 35 years, it's this:
A bicycle's age is irrelevant. The age of its last service is everything.
The oldest regularly ridden bicycle I've encountered was over 50 years old.
It wasn't sitting in a museum or hanging on a garage wall.
It was still being ridden every day.
The owner commuted approximately 20 kilometres daily and regularly completed loaded touring trips. By conservative estimates, that bicycle had travelled well over 150,000 kilometres.
So what kept it alive?
Almost every moving part had been replaced over the decades.
Yet the original frame and fork were still performing beautifully.
That's because a bicycle isn't one permanent machine.
It's a collection of consumable components attached to a frame.
This surprises many cyclists.
How can a 30-year-old bicycle feel smoother than one that's only three years old?
The answer is simple.
The older bike has been maintained.
The newer one has been neglected.
Think about it this way.
A 30-year-old bicycle may actually have:
Meanwhile, a three-year-old bicycle might still be running:
One has been cared for.
The other has simply grown older.
One story still stands out after all these years.
A customer owned a beautiful high-end carbon road bike worth well over R100,000.
It developed a small creaking sound while climbing.
The repair was straightforward.
A bottom bracket service costing only a few hundred Rand would have solved the problem.
Instead, the owner ignored it.
For almost eighteen months.
To make matters worse, the bike was regularly cleaned using a high-pressure washer.
The water forced its way past the bearing seals and washed away the grease protecting the bearings.
Eventually the bearings seized.
Instead of rotating inside the bearing, they began rotating inside the carbon frame itself.
The frame's bottom bracket shell became permanently damaged.
The entire frame had to be replaced.
A preventative maintenance job costing a few hundred Rand turned into a repair costing tens of thousands.
That story perfectly illustrates something I tell customers every day.
A bicycle will always tell you when it is hurting. You just have to listen.
This doesn't only happen with bottom brackets.
A stretched chain doesn't simply wear out.
It starts destroying everything around it.
The longer it's ignored, the more it wears:
A relatively inexpensive chain replacement suddenly becomes a complete drivetrain replacement.
Leaving a bicycle outdoors or allowing sweat and moisture to remain trapped between the frame and seatpost can create corrosion.
Eventually the seatpost becomes permanently bonded inside the frame.
Removing it often requires destructive methods that may damage the frame itself.
Over the years, I've noticed something interesting.
The cyclists whose bikes last decades don't necessarily spend the most money.
They simply build better habits.



One habit I wish every cyclist adopted is what I call the "drop test."
Before riding, lift the bike approximately 10 centimetres off the ground and let it settle back onto its tyres.
Listen carefully.
Any unusual rattle could indicate:
Long-term owners understand that dirt holds moisture.
After wet rides they spend just a few minutes:
Those few minutes often save years of unnecessary wear.
The longest-lasting bicycles rarely live outside.
They're stored:
Storage matters far more than many people realise.
The single biggest money-saving habit I've seen is checking chain wear regularly.
A simple chain wear gauge costs very little.
Using it every month can prevent thousands of Rand in drivetrain replacements.
Replacing one inexpensive chain at the right time protects:
Today's bicycles are both better and more demanding than ever before.
Modern engineering has produced:
Modern bicycles can handle incredible riding conditions.
The trade-off is complexity.
Modern bikes feature:
These systems perform brilliantly.
But they demand more precise maintenance.
Modern bikes handle extreme riding forces better than ever before.
They simply tolerate neglect much worse.
Years ago mechanics tightened bolts until they felt secure.
That approach doesn't work on carbon fibre.
Today's bikes require calibrated torque wrenches.
Too much force can permanently damage expensive components.
A tiny amount of chain lubricant or aerosol spray on a disc rotor can ruin braking performance.
Modern braking systems demand careful handling.
Today's bicycles often require software updates and battery management.
Just like your smartphone, your bike now contains technology that needs regular attention.
One of the biggest mistakes riders make is treating carbon components like aluminium.
Grease reduces friction.
Carbon assembly paste increases friction while allowing lower clamping force.
Using the wrong product can damage an expensive frame.
If I could teach every cyclist only one maintenance habit, it would be this.
After every ride:
The outside of the chain should feel almost dry.
Too much lubricant attracts dirt.
Dirt becomes grinding paste.
Grinding paste destroys drivetrains.
Five minutes of care can easily double the lifespan of expensive components.
If my own son or daughter bought their first serious bicycle tomorrow, I wouldn't tell them to memorise service intervals.
I'd tell them to change the way they think about ownership.
Your bicycle isn't a toy.
It's a precision machine.
If it starts making a noise, it's asking for help.
If it's wet, dry it.
If something doesn't feel right, investigate it.
Never assume that small problems stay small.
People think bicycles wear out because they get old.
After more than 35 years, I've learned they actually wear out because they are slowly abandoned, one ignored creak and one dirty ride at a time.
Look after your bicycle consistently, replace the consumable parts before they become expensive problems, and there's no reason your bike can't still be rolling smoothly decades from now.
Because in the end, bicycles rarely die of old age.
They usually die from neglect.
